Lost in space

The day was all about things dropping in from the sky. First it was birds. The little visitor of the day before had been cute, but when four warblers flew in from the fog and rain, I was not amused! They were hopping all over the deck, pecking at the spiders and other critters we had onboard. That was ok. But when one of them flew into the cabin, past the just unzipped screen hatch, I went into action. It is not easy to redirect a small terrified green and yellow bird using a chart of Lake Michigan. The birds were so fearless! They were hopping around on Jim’s shoes and perching on the wheel. Just as suddenly as they had appeared, they were gone, into the thick fog.
We pulled into the marina at Manitowac at lunch time, walked to an Italian deli for lunch, and then headed up 8th street. In September 1962, a 20 pound fragment of Sputnik IV landed in the middle of 8th street! The town celebrates the occasion every year with Sputnikfest! They crown a Miss Space Debris too! This years’ celebration would not be until September 12, after we’d gone. Sorry to miss it!
