Last spring we signed up for the AGLCA (Great Loopers) fall rendezvous at Joe Wheeler state park in northwest Alabama. We also made a reservation at the marina for our boat. However, by the time we were approaching Chicago, we realized that we could not realistically make it by boat. I called and cancelled our reservation at the marina, and breathed a sigh of relief. We could take our time on Heron, and we would drive to the rendezvous in Alabama.
On Saturday morning we loaded our bags into the rental car, went out to breakfast with the crew of SV Duchess, then started south along the Illinois side of the Mississippi. The road runs between huge white limestone cliffs and the river for the 20 miles between Grafton and Alton. After that we saw lots of fields, woods, and levees, but almost no glimpses of the river. The exception was Devil’s Backbone in southern Illinois. We got out of the car and stretched our legs.
Night in Paducah, Kentucky at a Comfort Inn.
