Since we were only going 42 miles, and not 110 miles, we had time to go out for breakfast before we left Hoppies Marina. I had never heard of the Blue Owl Restaurant and Bakery in historic Kimmswick, Missouri, but apparently Oprah, and Paula Dean, and the Today show, and on and on, had heard of the place, with rave reviews. We walked up the hill with Matt, crossed the railroad tracks, and headed 1/4 mile into the smallest town I have just about ever seen. We walked past the rear door of the Blue Owl where the staff were loading a van with all sorts of lovely looking pies and cakes. Yum! Jim and I had the apple and cream cheese filled French toast, while Matt had biscuits and gravy. I ordered a piece of levee high Apple pie to share. Best breakfast we’ve had in a long time!
We stocked up on pies from the bakery, then retraced our steps to our boat.
Matt followed our boat, and we all made it to Kaskaskia Lock and dam by 5pm, just off the Mississppi. We were allowed to tie up behind the lock wall. We were not going through the lock, and we were very grateful to have a safe place for the night. No runaway barges!
