It was another gorgeous sunrise as we untied from Bobby’s Fish Camp and headed south for 2 miles to our last lock on the western rivers. We’ve been through over 100 locks since lock 1 near Troy, New York. Locking thru has become a familiar routine, and before we knew it, we were back at sea level for the first time since mid-June.
We scanned every sunny beach and bank, looking for alligators, but did not see any. The river twists itself into pretzels! We were also on the lookout for tow boats pushing barges. We passed 7 or 8 tows on Thanksgiving, but very few on Saturday!

We anchored about 53 miles north of Mobile on the Alabama cutoff, a narrow channel off the Black Warrior Tombigbee. It was a nice spot, with 12 foot depths, and were protected from the tow boats that run 24/7 on the rivers. The only thing I didn’t like was when hunting or fishing boats would blast right by us, going fast and rocking our boat with their wake.

We were about to make the jump from catfish country to the gulf coast, so I thought it was appropriate to make shrimp and grits for dinner.
