Mobile or Bust!

Sunday November 29, 2015
We were so excited! We were going to Mobile! We would be in salt water, there would be beaches, it might even be warm!
The morning started out with patchy fog. I could deal with that, and I could see well enough. But then we ran into thick fog. Jim wanted to turn on our radar. The problem with that is other vessels (tow boats) don’t show up on AIS when we have the radar on. So I did the smart thing, and gave Jim the wheel. I would work on my Christmas cards! Soon enough the fog evaporated, and I finished my task.
We were on alligator watch, hoping to get a sighting, but the broad sandy banks of the day before had been replaced by plants that seemed to be choking the shoreline.
The trees lining the waterway disappeared, and we were running through marshes for the last miles to Mobile.
The waterfront in Mobile was quite a thrill. Lots of stealthy looking warships along our route. We also saw our first pointy nosed tugboat in months. We were used to seeing tow boats with their flat bows, perfect for pushing barges. Tug boats don’t push. They tie alongside or pull.
After passing through Mobile harbor, we headed south along the western side of Mobile Bay to Turner’s Marine Services on Dog River. Our mast had been shipped there. We would be able to sail again very soon! And it was warm! Yeah!
