Sunday November 30 thru Thursday December 3, 2015
I remember a story my friend Marie told me about Mobile, Alabama. In the 1950’s, Marie had her own tv show in Mobile on women’s interests and issues. The story goes that Span saw Marie on TV, and fell in love with her! They have been married ever since. Just heard from Marie that her beloved Span died last spring. Span was my uncle Martin’s best friend growing up in Bermuda. What an adorable couple Span and Marie were!
We had a great time at Turner’s Marine Supply on the Dog River, on the south side of Mobile. I rented a car from Enterprise for two days. When I was inspecting the car I walked thru a fire ant hill. Too late, the Enterprise guy said, “watch out for the ants!” Five bites on my left foot, one on my right. Talk about painful and itchy. By Thursday afternoon I was getting worried about my foot. One of the bites looked infected. Matt had arrived at the marina from a side trip to Wisconsin and back.He drove us to an urgent care center, then we enjoyed delicious oysters at Wintzell’s in downtown Mobile. The oyster house would have been there for years before Marie had her TV show!
We spent a lot of time unwrapping the mast and putting on the sails once the mast was stepped. We drove to Dauphin Island to watch the sunset over the beach. Fun!
Best of all was catching up with old friends like Matt at the marina, and meeting new friends, like Mike and Marylin on Sweet Pea, etc… When we in Maryland in November, we had picked up a set of used Atkins and Hoyle Davits for Matt in Baltimore. We stuck the Davits in our rental car and drove 850 miles to our boat just south of the Tennessee Mississippi border. We strapped the Davits on our fordeck, and motored 450 miles to Mobile, where we delivered the Davits to Matt’s boat, 3 slips down the dock from ours. How cool is that!!
