It had been a stormy night, but by morning the wind had died. Jim rowed us to shore in our trusty dinghy, Pelican. Fort Jefferson is a National Monument, built during the Civil War. We had to check in with an official with information on our boat and our dinghy before we could explore the grounds. Quite an impressive structure, made of bricks that were brought in. We climbed up the lighthouse steps and walked on the roof of the fort.
We had 40 miles to go to the Marquesas Key, so we were not able to walk around the whole fort. I would love to have seen the small boats that came ashore, loaded with Cuban refugees. It also would have been fun to camp at the fort.
We motored and sailed east to the north side of Marquesas key were we anchored for another stormy night. Beautiful sunset!
