After motor/ sailing all day, dodging crab pots for most of the way, we had a lovely stroll on a pristine white sandy Florida beach. There were gorgeous shells everywhere, no bugs, and the water was perfect for a dip. I can’t say we had the miles of beach
to ourselves. There was one other couple from Ontario there too. Where were we? Cape Sable, on the southern most tip of Florida (not including the Keys). It was a beautiful spot, miles and miles from no where!
After our swim and row back to our boat, we motored a few miles toward Little Shark River. Remembering our experiences with the aggressive mosquitoes on our last visit to the area, we opted to anchor offshore, in the Gulf of Mexico. We thought the bugs would never find us! Ha! It was a beautiful evening, very calm, with dramatic clouds and a spectacular sunset. We duct taped the inside of the hatch after dinner, and thought we would have a pleasant bug-free night. Wrong! The mosquitoes and no see ums smelled dinner, us, and they were on a mission for blood, ours! I don’t know how they were getting in! Coming up the sink drain? Coming down thru the solar fans? No idea. All I know is that at 2am I jumped in the shower. No hot water, as our engine had been off for 9 hours, but I was desperate. My legs were on fire. Agh!!!! I hate bugs!
It was a sleepless itchy night, anchored near Little Shark River in the Everglades.
