Friday April 29 – Saturday April 30, 2016
We motored against the wind for 4 hours, and picked up a mooring ball on the west side of Lignumvitae Key. Lovely evening on the mooring ball.
In the morning we put our trusty dinghy in the water, pulled out The mast, boom, rudder and sails, etc for our Portland Pudgy, and set off for the Lignumvitae Key. We knew there was a tour at 10am, so we gave ourselves 90 minutes to row/sail around to the other side of the key.
It was rough going, the wind and current were against us as I rowed. Undaunted, we put in at the shore, and Jim set up the sail. I love our little Pelican, but she goes not row very well, and sailing her in a stiff breeze was a bear. The solution was to row and sail. Kinda like motor sailing our big boat.
We were 10 minutes late, but as we were the only ones there, the ranger was very obliging. Loved the little house built for the caretakers. Loved the trails through lots of different kinds of indigenous trees. Lovely!
We sailed downwind, back to our boat on the mooring ball, made tuna sandwiches, and soon were on our way.
Night anchored by the Rt 1 bridge from Key Largo to the mainland. Beautiful sunset!
