Monday December 30, 2016
We had arrived in Florida on December 5, 2015, west of Pensacola. Today we crossed the border into Georgia, just north of Amelia Island. Yeah! We are making progress towards completing our Great Loop adventure!
We were swarmed by horse flies off Cumberland Island. Didn’t see any wild ponies roaming the beach as we motored by, but we did keep both battery operated bug zappers busy.
The day was a mixture of twisty channels through marshes and wide open bays. As we approached a Navy submarine facility, it was hard to see where we would go next. Then I spotted the familiar red and green marks, heading off into a marsh.
Crossing one bay, we saw first hand how a green (square) channel marker for the bay can also be a red (triangular) ICW marker. The key is to pay attention to the chart!
We motored under a 185 foot bridge at Brunswick. We are used to 65 foot and less bridges. This one was huge!
The Brunswick Landing Marina is located in an old Navy hurricane hole. Nice protection in the event of a storm. We pulled into the Marina and immediately started making friends. They have free washers and driers. Yeah! They were having a Memorial Day party that night with barbecue, wine, beer, good company, and fireworks. We told one couple that we were going to the Annapolis area. Oh, they loved to buy rum there! I asked if they would like us to pick them up some rum. Yes! Two cases! We were on a mission!
On Tuesday morning we rented a car and packed up for a road trip home for my brother’s wedding celebration.
Slip at Brunswick Landing Marina for the week.
