Side trip to St. Michaels

Thursday, May 14, 2015 We took a side trip to see my friend Jane (since 4th grade, that’s a long time) and her friend Ron in St. Michaels, Maryland. We left at noon on a beautiful day, and motor sailed in light air for about six hours to wind our way over to the picturesque town on the Eastern Shore. Jane and Ron wanted to treat us to dinner at the crab house by the shore, but I had other ideas. Thank goodness for cell phones. We called them as we slowly motored into the harbor. Where were they? They saw us, but we couldn’t see them. Finally Jane started waving her coat, and there she was, right in front of us on the shore. Then came the tricky part. How to pick them up? The maritime museum was closed. Should we anchor? Get a water taxi? We called around with no luck. Meanwhile, Jane and Ron had walked out to the maritime museum’s pier. I pulled up, easy as pie, like I had done this a thousand times before, picked them up, and off we went for a sunset dinner, drifting gently down the Miles River. It could not have been a more perfect evening. We celebrated our birthdays, as we try to do every year, then dropped them back at the museum pier just as night fell. Night at anchor off St. Michaels, listening to the church bells ring. Return to Gibson Island in the morning.
