Crossing the Delaware

We woke with the sun, pulled up the anchor, and headed to the Cheasapeake and Delaware Canal. We were meeting Jim’s 2nd cousin’s ex-husband for lunch at Summit North marina on the canal. I thought Skip had said to stay to the port side of the marina entrance, but maybe not as far over as we went. Oops! Ran aground. We were going very slow, and it was easy to back off the muddy shoal.  No damage done, and we moved on from our first running aground experience. Lovely lunch with Skip who we ran into in Norfolk. He and his wife are hoping to start the loop in a year.

By  the time we entered Delaware Bay in the afternoon, the tide and wind were against us.  We barely made it up to 3 knots for the next few hours. Delaware Bay is not cruising friendly like the Chesapeake. Lots of shoals, not much to see or do, and few places to anchor. We ended up tucked for the night behind a marsh inhabited by hundreds of birds and a lighthouse. Anchoring was tricky as the depth jumped from 5 feet to 30 feet in a blink of the eye. The current was strong, and it looked like we had anchored in a hottub with jets on. We’d heard that the flies could be legendary in the area, but they must have been off bothering someone else. Another beautiful sunset, and early to sleep!
