Day 7, Shangri La

Wednesday November 10, moving day. After breakfast on our patio we walked a few blocks to the flower market, then walked back to cool off in the pool. The owner of the Villas is the granddaughter of Prince Chakrabongse, and her son is celebrating his marriage this weekend. So time to clear out and let their party begin.

we took a cab to the Shangri La Bangkok hotel. Wow! Totally different from where we had spent the last 4 nights. For starters, we had to go thru baggage screening and a metal detector to get in. We had lunch at the huge buffet, then took the Sky train to the Jim Thompson house. Fascinating place in the middle of the city with lots of little buildings he moved from other places, set in a jungle like garden. I talked Jim into buying a linen shirt decorated with elephants. I think it will be perfect on this trip.
Back at the hotel, we found the Viking cruise greeting team. I had been worried about how we would get to the ship. The port is 2 hours away. But, thankfully, we were able to pay $50 each and secure a ride on one of the Viking buses.

We are going to miss having breakfast on our patio.

This is a poster for an upcoming event at the Chakrabongse Villas. The prince secretly married a commoner from Kiev, and that caused quite a stir back in the day. They built the palace in 1908 as a retreat by the River.
The flower market is a short walk away. It is busiest around 3-4am.
Big and glitzy Shangri La Hotel. I picked the hotel because Viking pre-extension guests were staying there.
Boring ceiling
Great view of the River from our 14th floor room.
You forget that you are in the middle of high rise buildings when you visit the Jim Thompson house.
This teapot has no lid! The opening for water is on the bottom.
Monkey see…

Happy to meet up with the Viking team and arrange to get a ride to our ship
It was wonderful to cool off with a swim. The pool is by the river and we could watch the dinner cruise boats going by.
