Day 13, Singapore

Tuesday November 15,2022

I am not sure why, but I have always wanted to go to Singapore. It sounded exotic, very British, and interesting. Then I saw the movie “Crazy Rich Asians” and that cemented ii in stone. I had to visit Singapore.

Singapore was not what I expected. Yes, we visited Raffles Hotel and it’s gift shop, and that was definitely Commonwealth Britain, thru and thru. What I didn’t realize until we arrived by ship was what an incredible location for a port It is, and what a huge port! They say there are 900 ships in the port on any given day. When Mr. Raffles founded the city back in the day, he made it a free port. It is quite impressive. Also amazing is the architecture of the high rise buildings. Loved the hotel with the “surfboard” on the roof. We drove by it, didn’t get to see it up close.

Also interesting to me is the preserved areas of little India and the old Malay areas. No one is allowed to live on the 2nd floor over the shops anymore. The shops are there, but no one lives there.

We had lunch at the Jumbo Seafood restaurant overlooking the River. Delicious chili crab.

Back on the ship, we had a reservation for dinner at Manfredi’s, Italian dining on the high seas. No additional charge. It is a small place and we had a table by the window, watching the sunset. Great dinner followed by a Singapore Sling in honor of the day!

Our bus drove by this famous hotel on our way to the city center.
These flowers for sale in little India will last “forever”.
Who needs a dryer when you can dry your clothes outside. Bonus for living on lowest floor…. Free windfalls!

We walked thru the newly renovated Raffles Hotel to the gift shop. Very posh. I heard that a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar costs $38!
The tour we had selected included lunch at the Jumbo Seafood restaurant, overlooking the River. The restaurant is reputed to have the best chili crab in Singapore.

We are from Maryland, and we know all about eating crab. It is messy! After you dive in, your fingers are slippery with crab crud. In Maryland, we would have a roll of paper towels on the table. We were given “towelettes” in a foil package, but we had used them to clean up before the meal. No napkins, no paper towels…. This girl from Maryland confesses to using the white tablecloth as a giant napkin!🤪
After lunch we went to the history museum. Loved this poster in a replica of a 1960’s home.
Window seat at Manfredi’s Italian restaurant back on the ship.
They have the BEST steaks onboard!

And finally. A Singapore Sling in the Explorer’s Lounge in the bow for a toast to a great day in Singapore.
