Day 35, Hunter Valley wines

Wednesday, December 7, 2022.

We sailed into Newcastle harbor in the morning. I think we were the first cruise ship to visit the city since Covid. The news station had a cameraman and others on the scene.

We took a bus excursion to the Hunter Valley for a “hands on” wine experience. “Feet in” would be a better description. It was fun. Jim and I won a bottle of wine!

We left the port at sunset, headed for Sydney.

The local news was covering our arrival. First ship since the start of Covid in Newcastle.
Our wine tasting event venue.

Local grapes were not in season, so they put 1 case of purple California grapes in each of 2 barrels.
Off went our shoes, and into the barrel we climbed. The goat was to squish enough grapes to fill a wine bottle with juice before the other team did.

Jim and his partner had to mop up grape juice with a disposable cloth, then squeeze it into a pitcher, then pour it the juice into a wine bottle. The whole process was repeated with another couple stamping in the barrel.
