We were awake by 5:30am. I decided I would do a laundry, so I threw three loads into the marina’s machines, then walked back to our boat. I was almost at Heron when I heard my name called out behind me. It was Jon and Lynn! They had been on the boat next to ours at the Great Loop rendezvous in Norfolk. We had not noticed that they were were just two boats away from us in Jersey City! They were getting ready to cast off their lines. Jon pulled out a piece of paper and explained that we should leave now! Not wait until early afternoon! Mmmmm! I had three loads of laundry in the washer. They headed off and we got ready to leave, as soon as the wash was finished.
It was another gorgeous day. Crystal clear blue skies, light winds from the south, and just the right temperature. Perfect for drying three loads of laundry on the boat as we motored north up the Hudson. I strung our yellow Jack lines all through the cabin. Worked great for the two sets of sheets and our clothes. The towels went outside on the life lines with clothes pins. Everything was dry by early afternoon!
We are learning more about how to use our Garmin chartplotter. As we were leaving New York City, we noted on the chartplotter that we had gone 540 miles since we started the great loop by Norfolk, Virginia.
The ride up the Hudson was wonderful, and we pretty much had the river to ourselves. The palisades on the New Jersey side rose almost straight up out of the river. We passed a nice little waterfront area with shops, restaurants, and a place to land in Yonkers, but in general there was very little access to the water along the Hudson. Both sides of the river have train tracks, and the rumble of either a passenger or freight train was a frequent sound.
We were headed for Half Moon Bay marina, north of tha Tappan Zee Bridge, for the night. I had won a free night as a door prize at the great loop rendezvous the year before. But, we had a dilemma. With our early start, we reached Half Moon Bay by 1pm. We still had 7 -8 hours of daylight left, it was a beautiful day, and the next day was supposed to be windier with rain. What to do???
We decided to keep on going. We stopped in Haverstraw for diesel, then continued up the Hudson. The hills on either side of us grew as we headed north. The river had some curves, plus some large estates perched up in the hills. Lovely day, beautiful scenery, what was there not to love about the Hudson?
