Day 64, Honolulu.

Wednesday, January 4, 2023.

We knew it was going to rain on Wednesday, so we had planned on seeing the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. It is a cultural museum housed in a wonderful three story Victorian building.

But first we had to get there. Fred and Dee are hysterical. Usually Dee drives, in her car. She won’t drive the Tesla, which is Fred’s “baby”. We enjoyed sitting in the back seat, listening to Dee tell Fred to get in the right lane… very fun!

We drove by Waikiki Beach, and stopped at Young’s Fish Market for char sui, turkey tails, and beef laulau. Everything gets dipped in poi (purple library paste) or not.

The Bishop Museum was a very interesting place. They had 3 levels, the most recent history was on the top story. A giant whale hangs in the center of the room. I particularly liked the artwork showing the phases of the moon. They also have an ancient statue. It looks like Munch’s “The Scream” done in stone.

We were standing in line at 4pm when Haleiwa Joe’s in Kaneohe opened for dinner. Peter and his wife Hyun joined us for dinner. Peter and I were assistant sailing instructors on Gibson Island many, many years ago! Dinner was fabulous. Fred ordered the biggest prime rib I have ever seen. There is a beautiful garden behind the restaurant. Fun dinner!

A model of a whale hangs in the museum. One shows his skin, the other shows his bones.
Kaneikokala was found by a native Hawaiian following his dreams. The statue yearned to be released from the cold earth where he was hidden. In 1906, he was placed in this spot in the Bishop Museum. Sunsquently, the museum staff tried to move him outside, but he won’t be moved!
