How to lock thru at the Waterford flight (Erie Canal locks #2-6).
Be prepared:
Put out lots of fenders. Round are best. Placement is important!
Have docking line reading. We have thin line threaded thru a short length of garden hose. Cleat one end mid ships.
Put on rubber work gloves.
Notify lock attendant that you are coming unless green light is on.
Proceed into lock very slowly. Bear to starboard for starboard side tie up.
grab cable that is in wall indent, wrap docking line around cable, and hang on tight. Meanwhile other person (me) grabs one of the long ropes hanging down the side of the lock.
The lock doors will close, and the water will begin to rise. Keep boat tight to wall so mast does not hit anything.
When boat is at top of lock, show lock pass to attendant, and proceed out of lock slowly when gates have opened.
Breathe sigh of relief.
Repeat, again and again. There were 5 locks in the space of 2 hours.
You will be very proficient when you get to lock No. 6! Sounds like a lot to do in a very short time. J.
