It was a grey day with the promise of rain as we motored 10 miles to Quinte where we filled our diesel tanks and our water tanks. Grace was excited! She was going through her first lock today!
We pulled up to the blue line of lock #1 on the Trent Severn waterway. The lock doors were not open yet, so we would wait, tied up at the blue line painted on the concrete wall. A little girl with big brown eyes looked imploringly at Jim. Jim knew exactly what the little girl wanted, to ride up in the lock with us. We had an extra child’s life preserver on board, so we asked the girl’s grandmother if they would both like to lock thru with us. Yes! Avery was 4, and she and Grace had a great time watching the boat rise in the lock.
We dropped Avery and her grandmother Vicki off on the far side of the lock, and they invited us to come for tea when we got to lock 7.
Meanwhile we spent the afternoon locking thru. The word on the lockmaster’s Twitter was that Grace was coming. Everyone at the locks were very kind to Grace, giving her stickers and cards. At lock #3, Grace helped turn the turn stole to open the lock!
Dinner at Mike and Vicki’s home with their three grandchildren.
Fun day!
What a wonderful experience meeting such nice people! That’s the part you will always remember.
